Each exam asks for its photo, signature and other documents in its own size. This chart puts them side by side. It is made from the same list of rules that the tools on this site use, so the chart and the tools always agree. When we update a rule, both change together.

Confirm with your notification. Boards can change these sizes between recruitment cycles. Before you upload, compare your row with the “How to apply” or “Guidelines for scanning” part of the notification you are applying under. Where it differs, the notification is right. This site is not affiliated with any board in this chart or with any government body.
How to read the chart
- Exam is the board, with the exams its rules cover.
- Document is what the form asks you to upload. Tap it to open the right tool with this exam already chosen.
- Pixels is the width × height of the picture. Some boards do not fix it; see the next section.
- File size is the smallest and largest size the portal accepts. Both limits matter: a file under the minimum is refused just like one over the maximum.
- Format is the file type. Every exam here asks for JPG, which is the same thing as JPEG.
- Last checked is the day we compared the row with the board’s notification.
- Source links to that notification, so you can check it yourself.
What “Not fixed by …” means
Some boards, at present UPSC, NTA, SSC and RRB, do not give an exact pixel size for every document. For those rows, the chart says “Not fixed by” and the board’s name. The KB range and the format are still the board’s rule, and the portal checks them. The pixels shown after “starts at” are only the size our tool begins with, chosen to suit the document. You can keep it, or type another size under Size rules in the tool if your notification gives one.
Where a notification says something about size without giving one exact number, such as a range of pixels, a size in centimetres or a smallest allowed size, the chart shows that note in small print in the same cell. Read it before you change anything.
Why each document has its own size
A photo is taller than it is wide, because it shows your head and shoulders. A signature is wide and short. A thumb impression is roughly square. A handwritten declaration holds several lines of writing, so it is the biggest of all and has the highest KB range. That is why one exam can ask for four different sizes, and why a file made for the photo box will not work in the signature box.
The KB ranges differ for a similar reason. A face has a lot of fine detail and needs more bytes to stay clear. A signature on clean white paper needs very few. Boards set a minimum as well as a maximum so that nobody uploads a picture squeezed so hard it can no longer be read.
What the chart does not show
Size is only half of a good upload. Each board also has rules about the background, the ink colour, how much of the photo your face should fill, and whether a signature may be in capital letters. Those rules are on each tool page, next to the exam they belong to, and our guide to why photos and signatures get rejected goes through them one by one. If you are photographing a signature or thumb impression, read how to scan a signature with your phone first.
Exam missing, or numbers changed?
If your exam is not in the chart, open the tool for your document, for example the photo resizer, and choose Custom size in step 1. Then type the width, height and KB limits from your notification under Size rules. If one of our rows no longer matches the latest notification, please tell us through the contact page, with a link to the notification, and we will check it and update the chart.
One more thing about KB
Portals disagree on whether 1 KB is 1,000 or 1,024 bytes. Files from this tool stay under the maximum and over the minimum by both definitions, so a “50 KB max” limit is never exceeded by a few bytes.
