When you need a 20 KB image
- Signature uploads (often 10–20 KB).
- Small passport-style photos on state recruitment and scholarship portals.
- Old portals with strict upload limits.
How to get the best result at 20 KB
- Choose your photo — the largest file size is already set to 20 KB.
- For a 20 KB file, a width of about 200–400 px gives the sharpest result. Enter it in the width box if the preview looks blurry.
- Download the JPG and check the size shown on the download button’s status line.
Signature and small photo at 20 KB
A photo from a phone camera is often 3 to 5 MB. To reach 20 KB it has to become more than a hundred times smaller. If the picture keeps all its pixels, the only way down is to throw away detail, and the result looks smudged. Cut the pixels first and the same 20 KB looks clean.
Sizes that stay sharp at 20 KB:
- Signature: about 300–400 pixels wide. Most of a signature is plain paper, which needs very few bytes. If your form fixes the size, as IBPS does with 140×60 px, use that instead.
- Small passport-style photo: about 200–300 pixels wide. A face has much more detail than paper, so it uses up 20 KB far faster.
Why a white background compresses well
A JPG is stored in tiny blocks of 8 × 8 pixels. A block of flat, even colour, such as clean white paper, takes almost no space. A block with grain, a shadow or a grey patch takes much more. On grey, shadowy paper, most of the 20 KB is spent on the paper itself and little is left for your signature, so its lines blur.
So give the picture a clean background before you compress. For a signature, photograph it in daylight on plain white paper, or use the signature resizer and tick Clean background to pure white. For a photo, stand in front of a plain light wall rather than a curtain or a shelf. You get a sharper file at the same size.
When the form also gives a minimum
Many signature boxes have a lower limit as well, for example 10–20 KB for IBPS and 10–20 KB for SSC. A file under the minimum is rejected just like one over the maximum. This page aims for just under 20 KB and has no minimum unless you type one under Size rules. For an exam form, the signature resizer keeps the file inside both limits once you choose your exam.
Need a different size? Use the compress to any KB tool. Filling an exam form? The exam photo resizer sets the size and KB range once you pick your exam.
Portals disagree on whether 1 KB is 1,000 or 1,024 bytes. Files from this tool stay under the maximum and over the minimum by both definitions, so a “50 KB max” limit is never exceeded by a few bytes.
