Compress image to any size in KB

Type the size you need and get a JPG at or just under it. Optional width and height let you match a form’s pixel limits too.

How should the image fit?
File format

Exam forms almost always want JPG. PNG can't be squeezed to a KB limit; WebP can.

Some portals ask for 200 DPI. This does not change the pixels.

Improve quality

How it works

JPG compression has a quality setting. Lower quality means a smaller file. The tool tries quality levels in a binary search — high, low, then halfway, and so on — until it finds the highest quality that still fits under your largest file size. If even the lowest quality is too big, it shrinks the pixel dimensions step by step until the file fits.

  1. Choose your image.
  2. Type the largest file size in KB (or use the slider).
  3. Optional: enter a width or height in pixels if the form specifies one.
  4. Download the result.

Tips for the best quality at small sizes

  • Smaller pixel dimensions look better than heavy compression. A 600 px wide photo at 50 KB looks sharper than a 3000 px photo squeezed to 50 KB.
  • Crop away empty background first — fewer pixels to store.
  • Photos of documents compress better if they are bright and evenly lit.

Popular sizes: 20 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB.

Portals disagree on whether 1 KB is 1,000 or 1,024 bytes. Files from this tool stay under the maximum and over the minimum by both definitions, so a “50 KB max” limit is never exceeded by a few bytes.

Frequently asked questions

Will compression reduce the photo quality?

Some quality is always lost with JPG compression, but the tool keeps the highest quality that fits your largest size. For very small sizes, reduce the pixel dimensions for a sharper result.

Can I compress a PNG?

Yes. The output is a JPG because JPG is far smaller for photos. Transparent areas become white.

Is there a file limit?

There is no upload, so there is no server limit. Very large photos (over ~50 megapixels) can be slow on older phones.
